Hard to believe, but most of today’s generation has never seen nor touched a rotary dial telephone. In fact, some young people I have spoken to have never even seen a vintage rotary phone in a or have even heard their parents talk about classic rotary phones from the days when they were growing up.
This isn’t a phenomenon that’s unique to these bold old phones, but rather an indication that our current generation is losing touch with our history and or heritage. Rotary dial phones are simply part of that history that is being lost.
History of the Rotary Phone
I am not going to go into any detail about the history of the rotary dial telephone in this article. Those who want to find out more about the history of the Western Electric phone can visit my History of the Rotary Dial Telephone article. There they can learn a bit about how these old phones found there way into our culture and why they remain in our culture even today.
Smart Phones are Nice. Rotary Phones are Historic
Does anyone among us think that fifty or one hundred years from now someone is going to be writing articles about today’s smart phones? I sure don’t. Yet that is exactly what is occurring today. Over a hundred years after their development, old phones are still collectible items on eBay and in fact bring high dollar amounts there and at other auction sites.
There’s a reason for vintage phone popularity. What’s your reason for being interested in these rotary dial telephones? I’d love it if you left a comment.
