When you look at one of today’s new smart phones it’s hard to imagine that they had their roots in the rotary phones of decades ago. The old classic rotary phone that many of us knew and loved laid the ground work for the smart phones of today!

Some of you probably remember a time when it actually took the intervention of a human telephone operator to complete your phone call! The operators actually had to manually connect the wires from your phone with the wires of the phone of the person you were calling. Hard to believe, isn’t it? Not too many years passed before automated switching equipment took the place of the operator.

Shortly after the automated switching equipment came onto the scene the 10 digit telephone number that we still know today came into being. Using a ten digit system allowed the phone company to note the source of the originating call and also the intended destination of the call. Using the additional feature of the three digit area code allowed the automated system to identify a generic region of the country as well. Although many things about our phones have changed over the decades, we still use the 10 digit phone number system.

At about the same time the country began to move from the vintage rotary phone to modern phones that used push buttons and tone dialing. Ultimately the bold old dial phones would be taken out of service, one by one, and would become antiques and relics of the past.

Today the classic rotary phone is returning to popularity. Many sources sell and restore rotary dial phones. Guess what? They still will work with today’s phone systems!
