I bet I’m not the only one who remembers the classic rotary phone at Grandma’s house?

Grandma’s Classic Rotary Dial Desk Phone

Generally speaking, it may have been placed in the hallway on a small niche built into the wall. Most homes of that era were, in effect, designed around the vintage rotary phone. This hallway niche was designed to hold a classic Western Electric Model 500 desk phone. More times than not this rotary dial phone was black in color.

Colored Rotary Phones

If Grandma was really living on the edge she might have a beige rotary dial telephone. Beige seemed to be a popular color for Grandmothers of a certain era. Shortly thereafter, different other color choices were made available to your Grandma and mine: red, avocado green, yellow, white and even a wild turquoise blue color!

What’s New? The Rotary Dial Wall Phone, That’s What!

Some homes from that era did not have a wall niche or other suitable place to install a rotary dial desk phone. As a result, some homes had a vintage wall phone placed on a wall. More often than not, this retro rotary phone was installed on a kitchen wall. Over time the classic rotary dial wall phone became very popular.

In our house we reached a point where two phones were needed: there was the original vintage rotary phone on a small table in my parent’s room and a second phone – a vintage wall phone – was installed on the kitchen wall. Guess what color both of these class rotary phones were? You guessed it – black!

Rotary Phone Wall Cord

I bet many of you can remember these rotary wall phones. They often were installed with a cord longer than normal, and nine times out of ten that rotary phone cord was stretched to the limit so that someone could talk on the phone in the hallway or another room other than which the phone was installed. If there was a teenage girl in the home you can bet that she stretched that vintage rotary phone cord to the limit so that she could chat with her girl friends in privacy! Some of those cords were stretched so much that even when the phone earpiece was placed back in the phone cradle the cord reached all the way to the floor!

Grandma’s Classic Rotary Phone is Reborn

Funny how history repeats itself. Today, the classic rotary phone has suffered a resurgence in popularity. You can now see these vintage rotary telephones in place at homes sporting the most current decor, but they seem to fit best in homes with a retro interior design. Grandma never would have expected that her phone would be working fifty or 60 years later, but these classic rotary phone’s were built to last and remain part of our telephone history.
