This phone was purchased for my wife to go in our vintage inspired red kitchen. It is perfect. As noted in other reviews, the handset is fairly heavy. If I were rating this phone for every possible negative I would also note that there is this annoying tether that connects the handset to the wall. However, this is not a big negative because we already have a set of cordless phones for use around the house. They are used for long conversations as we can take them into the room with the sofa and lay around conversing for hours while our servants fan us and feed us grapes.

For anyone who wants a wonderful retro phone (i.e., not sure the era of it but it seems very 30s-40s to me), this is it. My grandmother had one of these and it certainly looks and feels authentic. It is substantially heavy — the handset has weight to it, just like her old handset. We have an old house with a phone nook so this looks just perfect. I thought the price was pretty reasonable too. We also have the wall phone counterpart to it in our kitchen and that looks and feels great too.

Hard to believe, but most of today’s generation has never seen nor touched a rotary dial telephone. In fact, some young people I have spoken to have never even seen a vintage rotary phone in a or have even heard their parents talk about classic rotary phones from the days when they were growing up.

This isn’t a phenomenon that’s unique to these bold old phones, but rather an indication that our current generation is losing touch with our history and or heritage. Rotary dial phones are simply part of that history that is being lost.

History of the Rotary Phone

I am not going to go into any detail about the history of the rotary dial telephone in this article. A bit of rotary phone history: Today’s rotary phone was originally introduced in 1904 but made popular by the Bell System starting in 1919. The rotary phone was phased out starting in the 1950′s and ultimately replaced by Touch Tone Dialing.

Some telephone systems in the US no longer recognize rotary dialing by default, but will only support push-button phones instead, in which case the rotary dialing system would have to be ordered from the telephone company as a special feature, to support older customer equipment. However most actually do accept dial phoning without fail.

In telephony, the word dialing describes the process of placing a telephone call, or more specifically of entering the number to be called into the telephone system.

Pink Princess Rotary Phone

In 1959 Bell Systems decided to market a phone primarily toward women and teenagers. The phone chosen for this was the Pink Princess Rotary Phone!

One of the neat features of the Princess Phone was a build in night light which made this classic rotary phone perfect for use as a nightlight. As such the old phone was frequently used in bedrooms where its nightlight could be featured. In addition to acting as a night light, the light also caused the rotary dial to be lighted as well. This allowed the phone user to dial in the night time.

An advertising slogan was built around the Pink Princess phone: “It’s Little, It’s Lovely & It Lights” was a popular phrase describing Princess phones in advertisements.

A great color choice offering was available on the Princess phone. Teen girls and women, to whom the Princess phone was marketed, loved the pink, yellow, white, beige and turquoise phone colors.

The Princess phone was primarily marketed toward women and teen girls and was made available in a variety of stylish colors: Moss green, pink, yellow, red, white, beige, ivory grey and turquoise.

The princess phone had an external electric transformer which set it apart from it’s rotary phone cousins. This transformer was necessary to provide power to the lighted dial. The thinness of the Princess Phone also required an external ringer that was wired to the external transformer as well. Western Electric had not manufactured a ringer system that would fit inside the narrow princess phone case.

A fully restored Pink Princess Phone can be worth hundreds of dollars on eBay or at a phone auction. But remember, you can buy a nice retor version from our Amazon store!
